Want to know where all the cool kids hang on Derby Day? Where Sydney’s style set and Melbourne’s cool kids collide – The Emirates Marquee! Kicking off the Melbourne Cup Carnival in style, Emirates entertained a number of fashionable guests in it’s Australian-themed marquee.
The Emirates divisional vice president Barry Brown said that this week of racing now goes worldwide and as the Emirates Melbourne Cup Day naming sponsor it was bound to be the best marquee by far! All week guests will get to experience the Australian homestead inspired marquee, which was created in collaboration with Bazmark Inq’s Silvana Azzi Heras who has worked with Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin, celebrating 20 years of the airlines operations to the country. Inspiration was taken from the vibrant Australian flora and fauna with design elements including eucalyptus mint, waratahs and kangaroo paws. Under a four metre gumtree, guests feasted on pearl meat, a rare and prized seafood served in pearl shells sourced from the crystal waters off the north west coast of Western Australia.
While it was my game to capture the fashion elite, there were many Australian icons celebrating the action off the racecourse including international celebrity chef Curtis Stone, actress Rachel Griffiths, sporting legend Shane Warne and son Jackson, the Hon. Julie Bishop MP and partner David Panton, Olympian James Magnussen, and last year’s Emirates Melbourne Cup winner Michelle Payne.
The prevalent look for Derby Day was definitely polished – a spotlight thrown on texture, intricate fabrication and grand accessories. Opulent shoes and bags were in abundance, personalisation has been dominant this year I’m applauding Christian Wilkins for taking it trackside.
With Emirates starting the week in such great tone, I can’t wait to see what they have in store for the upcoming race days, particularly EMIRATES MELBOURNE CUP DAY!
